After watching her favorite television show, CSI: Criminal Scene Investigation, Layana Jefferson envisions the day when she is a renowned forensic scientist. She is one of ReBUILDetroit scholars attending the Summer Enrichment Program at Marygrove College this month.
Jefferson graduated from the HEART (Health Education and Related Technology) Academy in Harper Woods in 2013. She spent two years at another higher education institution in Michigan before transferring to Marygrove College.
“Marygrove College offers the forensic science program that I am interested in and it’s convenient. I’m close to home,” Jefferson said. “I’ve always been interested in science. When I was a kid, I loved experimenting with my science kit.”
Encouraged by her grandmother to apply to the ReBUILDetroit scholars program, Jefferson loves to learn and seeks new experiences. The ReBUILDetroit program along with Marygrove College provides an ideal learning environment with smaller classes and a multi-institutional network of academic support and mentors.
Like the television show, Jefferson understands that forensic science holds the answer to solve mysteries. Her quest for knowledge, make a difference and to be someone will benefit all ReBUILDetroit scholars and her future career as a forensic scientist.
