ReBUILDetroit scholars from Marygrove College facilitate games in leadership and trust for about 30 middle school students from Bethune Elementary-Middle School.
“Your future starts right now,” says Sandra Chatman, Student Engagement Specialist at Marygrove College. “Whatever you want to do, chase after it. Right now is the perfect time for you to take advantage of what’s happening in Detroit.”
The ReBUILDetroit program provides an opportunity for underrepresented individuals interested in the biomedical sciences to get a college education. “We need to plant the seed early about college,” says Chatman. “They may be the first in their family to get a college education.”
“Bringing Bethune students here allows them to see what their future could look like a few years from now,” says Robyn Tsukayama, Director of the Student Success Center. “The Bethune students look up to the ReBUILDetroit scholars since many of them come from the same neighborhoods and schools.”
ReBUILDetroit scholars show the Bethune students that there are opportunities for their future. Scholars are mentors and leaders to their younger counterparts. “It is a good learning experience for both scholars and students,” says Chatman.
