About two dozen instructors for the ReBUILDetroit Summer Enrichment Program at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) met Friday to review final preparations for scholars.
There are 20 ReBUILDetroit scholars attending the UDM program which starts at 8:30 Monday morning with a parent/scholar orientation. The 4-week program is designed to prepare scholars for the rigors of college. Scholars will attend academic courses in the morning followed by team building activities and academic support classes in the afternoon. The schedule is similar to what they would expect within their first year.
Mentoring is a key component. Faculty will actively engage with students helping them acclimate to the rigors of academics. “This is very exciting for us and the students,” said Dean Gary Kuleck. “Getting students involved in research early in their academic career keeps them engaged.”
In addition to the 4-week program, two weekend residential programs are scheduled with ReBUILDetroit scholars from Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) and Marygrove College. This will allow scholars to build networks not only with those at their home institution but across all four institutions.
The ReBUILDetroit program begins on July 6 at UDM, Marygrove College and WCCCD. Wayne State University’s program began June 22.
