University of Detroit Mercy students of Biology 3510 presented their semester-long research posters Dec. 4, in the Fountain Lounge in the Student Union. Thanks to an NIH Pilot Grant, Professor of Biology, Gregory Grabowski and Associate Professor of Biology, Rachelle Belanger were able to transform the traditional Histology Lab into an inquiry-based Histotechnology Lab. 10 ReBUILDetroit scholars along with other students used a rat model of diabetes to answer hypothesis-driven questions about how type 1 diabetes affects different tissues in the body. The professor’s diabetic model allowed scholars to have an abbreviated research experience that is typically not available to undergraduate students.
