Title of Research Project:
Modulation of cellular communication to manage traumatic brain injury
Research Description:
The effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) through e. g. stroke, neurodegenerative disease, or neurotoxin consumption are grave and can be life-changing. This project strives to develop compounds that make it possible to manage the effects of TBI. Our drug targets are signaling pathways activated after injury occurred. The goal is to understand cellular communication associated with TBI and to halt or at least slow disease progression resulting from the loss of neurons.
In collaboration with the College of Pharmacy at the University of Toledo where compounds are tested in cell-based assays, small molecular probes are being developed. A classic drug-development project that combines synthetic organic chemistry with pharmacology.
