Recognizing our Intersections of Identity and Building a Culture of Mentoring

Session Abstract:

In this interactive session, participants will take a closer look at the concept of intersectionality and how our own intersectional identities and those of our students matter for the mentoring work we do. Specifically, we will consider ways to approach the difficult conversations of mentoring, including ways to provide critical feedback constructively and the ways in which we recommend students with greater intentionality even when we have reservations. Importantly, we will take up the challenge of what it means to create a culture of mentoring within our departments and more localized work spaces.
